Advice when buying a garage door

Many people’s primary concern when choosing a new garage door will be its appearance. At ABI we also think appearance is important and that is why you’ll find a huge range of styles here.

However, there are other things to take into consideration when choosing your door, including ease of operation, durability and security. With this in mind, ask yourself the following questions before making your purchase:

What are you going to use the garage for?

Different types of doors are useful for different reasons. For example, if you use garage as a workshop, consider insulated doors, or either roller or sectional doors if you need to create more space, in terms of height or width. Our staff will be able to assess the type of door that you need by asking a few questions.

What size door do you need?

The size of the door you need will depend on the size of the opening on your garage, which in most cases will depend on the internal frame dimensions.

What type of security do I need?

Most of the garage doors that we supply include features which provide a high level of security as standard, but if you need extra levels of security, we would be delighted to help to choose a garage door to suit.

What type of finish do I need?

Consider the style, colours and finish of existing doors & windows within your home. Try to choose a garage door that matches their features and the surrounding environment.

It would be advisable to choose a door that complements the aesthetic of the rest of the garage and house. For example, if you live in an old Georgian farmhouse, it might make more sense to choose a wooden door with a Georgian appearance, rather than a white roller door, for example.

Is your garage door supplier a member of the DHF?

Members of the Door and Hardware Federation (DHF) are committed to supplying products to meet the latest regulations and safety requirements, as well as ensuring that its members maintain high levels of technical competence and integrity. In addition to being committed members of the DHF, all Hörmann garage doors are manufactured according to the Quality Management System DIN ISO 9001 and meet all the requirements of the European Standard 13241-1.

Are you planning to purchase your garage door over the internet?

If so, you must take extra care to ensure that dimensions are correct, as many vendors will not accept returns because the responsibility lies with you in ensuring that you have supplied the correct information when placing your order. Frankly, it is also advisable to speak to experts face-to-face to help accurately ascertain your needs.
